St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School is a Catholic voluntary aided school in the archdiocese of Southwark. It has strong community links with St Lawrence's parish in Sidcup and in the local area and has an active parents association, which holds social and fundraising events regularly.
Extra-curricular activities include orchestra and other various activities during the year. Instrumental tuition on string, brass and woodwind is given by staff from the Bexley Music Centre.
Recycling projects play an important role in the life of the school, and it has been awarded the Bexley Environmental Challenge Cup twice in its short history, along with numerous other certificates for its efforts.
In 2003 it was the London Regional winner in the National Greenfi ngers Competition.
St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School came to Soundsorba Ltd for a solution to their noise problem.
Recent studies have shown that many classrooms have poor acoustics. As a result, children with normal hearing are often unable to make out what is being said in class. While adults will guess at missing words, children find it much harder to fill in the gaps and their educational development can suffer.
Soundsorba helped them to reduce the echo and reverberation in their classrooms. A reverberation time of 0.6 or 0.8 is required for classrooms, so Soundsorba worked to achieve this. After careful acoustic calculations were carried out on the classrooms Soundsorba could quantify exactly how much sound absorption was needed in each classroom.
Along with providing them with a great product with great acoustic properties the Wallsorba acoustic panels also fitted in well with the colour schemes in the seperate classrooms. This was a key issue for SPCCPS. They did not want to have to re-decorate all the classrooms and add to their costs. They were d elighted to see that Soundsorba offered a range of different colours from their standard colour range. Soundsorba Ltd offer many different fabric colour finishes so that matching the acoustic panels with the decor is not a problem.
The Wallsorba Type C panels were used for this project.
The Wallsorba Shadow Joint Panel system has no visible fixing sections on any of the four sides of the panel. The panel has reinforced edges on all sides with the fabric bonded to the face and then wrapped around all four sides. The finished product is an individual sound absorbing panel which can be used in single units, joined with other acoustic panels or installed with shadow gaps as a design feature. The fabric finish is wrapped around the two long and the two short sides which all have reinforcing strips to protect the edges.
